Here are some very “eye opening” facts concerning encryption…

November 4th, 2009 admin No comments

“The Human Factor in Laptop Encryption: U.S. Study” key findings:

  • 92% of IT security practitioners report that someone in their organization has had a laptop lost or stolen and 71% report that it resulted in a data breach!;
  • 56% of business managers have disengaged their laptop’s encryption
  • Only 45% of IT security practitioners report that their organization were able to prove the contents of missing laptops were encrypted;
  • Only 52% of business managers have employer provided encryption;
  • 57% of business managers either keep a written record of their encryption password, or share it with  others in case they forget it;
  • 61% of business managers share their passwords, compared to only 4% of IT managers.

“Encryption is a very useful tool for protecting your the data. However, do you encrypt everything?”

  1. Have you encrypted your email?
  2. Have you encrypted the attachment from the Sales Director you downloaded?
  3. How about cookies which provide access to your hosted email or sales tools such as Gmail or Salesforce.com?
  4. Could the thief access your internal network via a VPN connection from your machine?
  5. It isn’t just the encrypted data on the machine that is at risk. Every day we download and access web sites without thinking about their security.
  6. All these factors can be as important and damaging as the data itself.
  7. Backstopp gives you 100% peace of mind that any data and means of accessing remote data are removed from the machine.

“Can your customers afford $6.65 million for a data breach if encryption fails due to human error?”

  • In 2008 the average total cost of a data breach was $6.65 million, up from $6.35 million last year and $4.54 in 2005.
  • In 2008, the per-victim cost of a data breach was $202, up from $197 in 2007, and from $138 when the study was launched in 2005.
  • Breaches involving a third party to which data had been outsourced bore a per-victim cost of $231, whereas self contained breaches bore a per-victim cost of $179.
  • Breaches that were the result of a malicious act bore a per-victim cost of $225, whereas breaches that were the result of negligence bore a per-victim cost of $199.
  • Breaches that were the result of a lost or stolen laptop computer bore a per-victim cost of $249, whereas breaches that did not involve a lost or stolen laptop computer bore a per-victim cost of $177.
  • If the data breach was a first-time event for the company the per victim cost was $243, but if the company had experienced a breach previously the per victim cost was $192.

Key Features

Key features

Hosted BackStopp is a securely hosted solution so there is no expensive server side software or databases to install or maintain. Should your device become lost or stolen simply logon to the BackStopp web console at www.BackStoppUSA.com

GSM BackStopp can utilize the mobile GSM network to decommission your lost or stolen devices. This means BackStopp can locate and decommission data on your stolen laptop even if it is never connected to the internet. In GSM mode the decommission instruction is immediately sent to the stolen laptop.

When booted, the GSM card intercepts the decommission instruction and securely deletes the specified data on the laptop. All this happens before the machine is logged on and is invisible to the user. BackStopp’s GSM functionality can be utilized on laptops with built-in GSM chips or through 3G USB Modems.

Internet BackStopp can be used on any laptop which accesses the internet so no new hardware is required. When utilizing the internet the Backstopp client informs the Backstopp servers that it is available and checks for decommission instruction. If there is a decommission instruction, Backstopp securely deletes all specified data on that machine. This can be carried out before the computer is logged on.

RFID / WiFi integration Backstopp continuously monitors all laptop’s movements throughout an organization’s premises. If a device enters an unauthorized zone Backstopp can either automatically issue a data delete instruction to the device or send an SMS warning to the legitimate user and/or security staff to quickly alert them to the potential security breach.

Volume encryption Backstopp’s integrated volume encryption functionality ensures that even the smartest thieves will find your device a tough nut to crack. Our volume encryption functionality means that any thief who attempts to deactivate the Backstopp communication channels or remove the hard disk will find nothing more than highly encrypted data.

Multiple form factors BackStopp spans all your devices from server to mobile phone. Manage all of your servers. Desktops, Laptops, Netbooks, PDAs and mobile phones from one single console.

Secure delete Erasing data using the operating system API is not a sufficient defense against identify theft or corporate sabotage professionals. Operating systems merely mark the appropriate parts of the disk as free in the file allocation table leaving the actual data on the disk. BackStopp uses file deletion patterns detailed in the US Department of Defense’s National Industrial Security Program Operating Manual (5220-22.M) ensuring decommission.

Culprit identification BackStopp’s unique culprit identification capability utilizes front facing cameras that are integrated into many laptop lids. A photo possibility identifying the culprit is included in the BackStopp Decommission report. Coupled with GSM triangulation and positioning Backstopp provides powerful tools for law enforcement agencies to retrieve the property, apprehend the thief and achieve a successful prosecution.

Innovative technology deletes data on stolen devices and identifies the culprit!

Portsmouth, NH November 10, 2009 — On Black Friday 2009, the BackStopp™ (http://www.backstoppusa.com/) data destruction software will makes its American debut through an initial retail roll-out in 22 Micro Center super computer stores in 15 U.S. states. A unique tool created by Virtuity Ltd. of Sheffield, United Kingdom, Backstopp is the only product available that helps consumers delete personal data from their PDAs, cell phones, or laptops within seconds if it’s lost or stolen. As countless thefts and losses occur annually, businesses and consumers need affordable and reliable tools to protect mobile data.  According to Safeware Insurance, a notebook laptop is stolen every 53 seconds.

As consumers enter the holiday shopping season the desire to protect the information stored on their newly acquired electronic devices is meriting the inclusion of Backstopp among the must-have software products.  For businesses, Backstopp serves as an integral part of a comprehensive mobile computer strategy protecting sensitive customer and company data located on employee laptop computers, PDAs, cell phones and other mobile technology devices traveling the globe.

“BackStopp™ uses U.S. Department of Defense standards to destroy data on lost or stolen mobile technology devices in an average of 100 seconds and can be used on any internet accessing device with no new hardware required,” states Regan McCarthy, President & Founder, ID&C, LLC d/b/a/ BackStoppUSA.  Our retail roll-out this month with Micro Center is just the beginning; “we have high expectations that this software will quickly be adopted by other retailers, savvy consumers and CSOs everywhere.”

With Backstopp, a missing mobile device can be disabled using the fastest communications protocols available on the market today. The proprietary “always on” service destroys the operating systems of the missing device to render it completely useless while integrating with secure online back-up services so all data can be easily reloaded onto a new device. In cases of theft, Backstopp is often able to identify the culprit. Also available to the U.S. market in November is ©LeakStopp, a tool designed to protect unauthorized USB sticks/devices from accessing protected machines, thus preventing the copy or transfer of sensitive data.

 “Our software has proven effective in Europe for the past 2 years with companies such as
